    Default HP Microserver O/S choices

    Hi
I wanted to know what O/S people are using whether as their main O/S even if you have a VM which O/S out of the VM's is best. I am currently using Xpeneology but not as keen as my friends who also use it, used to use Windows home server 2011, which I liked. I would welcome comments about why you like or dont like the OS on your HP.
    Many thanks
    LS

Server 2008 r2 onwards have all been good for me. Would setting up ESXi be an idea for you or do you want a conventional server? It's no where near as hard to get setup as I thought it would be and is easy to use. Adds flexibility as you can chop and change and you can test stuff before moving it to a production VM.

I tried m8, but I have not yet changed CPU lolol so I think this is why I cannot load ESXi

WHS 2012 R2 on my gen 7. I love the fact that as it's windows the learning curve wasn't that steep (sab, couch and nzb drone).

The only downside I have is that I haven't got round to upgrading the ram, so it takes a while to get going.

    Thanks to moonrat

I don't think you need to upgrade the cpu, just don't run too many VMs simultaneously, I didn't upgrade my CPU immediately

    Thanks to evilsatan

    Hi
oh, I thought Celeron was incapable of virtualisation and also I thought u had to add a p222 raid array as the one in wasnt too clever either, obviously I got that wrong lol.
I have 8gig of ram and tried all the HP images of ESXi and failed every time.....duh.
    thanks

My memory has gone already but I don't think the P222 was a requirement for ESXi, I think it was one of two RAID cards that were completely supported by the BIOS for better RAID levels and performance. I believe you can't use RAID5 on the built in controller but RAID1 should work fine.

I would suggest installing the service pack and then trying my steps here and reporting back:

That would be even easier then if you don't care for performance gains of raid0 or redundancy of other levels, Just store the VMs on whatever disk you care too. I just like how you can simply add a VM with minimal effort and switch between them. I will have one for my home media automation and another as a work production and others just as test environments.

    Thanks to evilsatan

I've been using MS SBS 2011 on my Gen7 for a couple of years now. Running Exchange 2010 for a couple of domain names and email accounts

it's slow. But it works for a small email server and sharing files. I don't bother with sharepoint or Lync.

Its the N40L I think with 8GB RAM and 1.5Ghz CPU.

It will do me another 12-24 months i'm hoping...

I did have 2012 server (not r2) with Exchange 2013 but it ran like a turd so just use SBS2011.
