    Advice vDSL FTTC Router Recommendations

    Hullo again!

My Dad has recently gone with plusnet FTTC at home and it comes with the basic plusnet router & BT modem. [28Mbps Down, 4 Mbps Up - not great but better than his ADSL2+.]

this is fine, but its a little basic and offers no VPN access for when I need to help Dad out remotely.

Can anyone recommend a vDSL router that has VPN functionality? Obviously there is Draytek, but I am used to watchguards and cisco's. I normally stay clear of Netgear, Zyxel.

I had been looking at Sonicwalls (TZ -210)on ebay but none of them say they are vDSL enabled and they probably aren't at my lower end price range.

Any suggestions welcome. It would have to be wireless enabled too.

Draytek Vigor 2860n is brilliant, offers VPN and tonnes of other features, the 2860ac has AC wireless too. The 2760n is cheaper and now runs DrayOS which is a vast improvement over their original firmware on there which was horrible, it has VPN features but not the same dial-in section I am used to seeing on the 2860 so you might want to check what it can/can't do before choosing.

I have always been happy with Draytek so haven't tried any others really other than the Netgear Nighthawk but I prefer the features of the Draytek over the wireless performance of the Netgear.

I do like the look of that 2860n as I was looking for a better router but fuck me that is expensive! Nearly £200 ffs

It's a business router mate so they cost more but stable. If you want a second hand one you can save money, the 2850n supports VDSL and VPN, they regularly go on ebay.

Which model of Sky router do you have? I have used tools to recover the username/pass off some models before.

A VPN server is much preferable at his house so I can VPN in via SSL / IPSec. Either to configure devices on his LAN or help him out as he has a desktop, and 2 lappies now. And with Windows 10 coming out I see this remote IT Support being used considerably more....

Teamviewer is great for a one off job but in truth it does my head in all the pop ups.

I had thought about a Rpi but not had any experience with them - would it completely replace the router? Actually I would still need a switch for his printers, and desktop if it did.

Draytek's looking like the only option? I don't mind getting a business class vDSL router come to think of it as he can claim the tax back.

The Pi would just be used as a VPN server, not a router replacement IIRC.

Yeah the Plusnet equipment is total shite, their two box solution is ridiculous i had to put one of these in for a mate as it was just a mess having two boxes.

I put in one of these

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

For the VPN if you've got an endpoint that supports ipsec on your side then just match the encryption settings on both sides and it will work wont matter on manufacturer etc. With this you can bin the plusnet equipment, just create a wan interface with these settings

    Type: PPPOE
    Modulation: vdsl
    full plusnet username
    password

and use vlan ID: 101 (this will only apply to the wan link not the rest of the lan)

and it will connect no problems, ive been happy with it just had a log on then to grab those settings and its been on for 4 months solid hasnt flapped on him once yet its also got 2.4ghz 5ghz wireless

    Thanks to Likkle
