Can the Display Name of an HDD Be Changed?

...can the 'Display Name' be changed for a given storage device? And if so, how is this accomplished? I simply would like to have a more friendly name for any given portable device.

I've changed names for plenty of devices before by modding *.inf files, but I have a funny feeling this may not work with hard drives.

The normal method is to find the relevant INF file, look for your hardware ID, then change the corresponding device name.

The reason I think this may not work with hard drives is that there must be new hard drives coming out all the time with new hardware ID's, but windows still recognises them using it's old INF files.

although I found I had to give permission to the actual folder the key was in and not the who tree

Exactly what I was looking for. The steps are slightly different for Win-10 but close enough that most should be able to figure it out. Thanks Pickie!
