High Ping and Slowing Internet

For no reason that I can work out my internet ping and speed have dropped off significantly.

When I start my PC in safemode I get 18ms Ping and 159MB download speed through my Virgin broadband then when I restart normally the ping drops to 85ms-170ms and my download speed drops to 30-75MB.

I have looked at what is running and can't see anything that would cause any problems and have also downloaded the latest network driver from Gigabyte and installed without effect.

When I reboot my router the speed goes back to normal for a few minutes then reverts back to the slower speed.

Is the speed consistent in safe mode or does it slow down too? If it is consistent then it's usually a case of running msconfig and deselecting all non-Microsoft services and startup items then re-enable them until you find the culprit. Or you could try removing the driver and deleting it and let windows choose one and test that.

I assume this is wired to the router?

I use this to monitor http://www.gmwsoftware.co.uk/ as I am having a similar issue but mine is related to overload at peak times and I am giving the ISP shit for what good it is doing.

i too been having similar problems on 100mb vermin connection, especially over the last 2 weeks on BF4, in game my ping is normally 15-25 but shoots up to about 300 & even seen it upto 900 for no reason.
even did a rresh install but no joy.
im hard wired And always have been. yet in game i get 120-140 fps.

Tried disabling everything with MSCONFIG and no change. Deleted the network driver and re-booted so Windows would used its default option and again still no change.
