Default HP G60-215EM constant 25% CPU usage.

This laptop has been given to me to help sell for the owner. Possibility it may end up on here, but 1st I need to solve a strange problem it's having with Windows 8.

Originally, it was a Vista system.

It's a Dual Core Turion RM-72 and no matter what it's doing, the CPU never goes above 25% usage.

It has suffered with heating issues in the past and I've repasted with Arctic Silver.

It's got the latest BIOS which is about as customisable as a toaster.

Any clues as to why it runs incredibly slow and won't use any more CPU?

Processor dead perhaps? Never seen anything like this before.

Maybe a incompatibility issue and should be downgraded back to Windows 7?

I would say a format would be a good start if you haven't done that already, not seen a processor limited before. Have you tried running a burn in test?

Can't get it to do a lot. Painfully slow. It's a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro x64. so perhaps attempt Windows 7 you reckon? I was thinking because its a lack of available chipset drivers.

Have you thought about using a linux distro?

I would, but the idea is to flog it. Not as much interest from Joe Public if a plonk Linux on it.

no i meant to boot it with a linux disk - i.e., ubuntu. If it ran fine with linux then the problem was most likely to be software related.

Oh I see. I hadn't tried that, no. Bit I've installed Windows 7 and so far, so good. I'm going install everything then upgrade it to Windows 10. If that fails, then I'll give Ubuntu a bash to test it.

If not then I would be tempted to stick to win 7, solid OS, only downside is the public would rather win 10...
