So I've been away for a few weeks - got an email error report from my NAS yesterday saying one of the HDD's wasn't plugged in and the raid had gone into degraded mode. It's a TS-412 with 4x 2Tb Samsung drives that have been running constantly for about 4 years now and configured as Raid 5. When I bought the bits and set it up I bought 5 drives and kept one as a spare so now I'm home I've plugged the new spare drive in and it's currently rebuilding.
My concern is that as the other 3 drives are the same age and have had the same amount of wear and tear (It runs Sickbeard and NZBGet 24/7 as well as being my main media storage for movies/music/photos/general docs etc...) so they could be due to fail any time soon and I need to figure out some options to replace/upgrade it before it becomes terminal and I lose all 5+Tb of data on there.
Any cheap(ish) NAS boxes out there anyone one would recommend - I guess increasing capacity would make sense - budget is probably max £500 including drives which I know makes things tight for getting something decent - but thats all there is
I believe I could just buy 4 new drives and replace them one at a time and let the raid rebuild each time - but that's only going to increase the stress on the remaining drives unnecessarily so should probably be a last resort.
Anyone got any recommendations please? I guess ideally I'd like to add a new NAS with bigger storage capacity, backup all the QNAP stuff onto it then in the future whack some new drives into the QNAP and keep using it.
