Prices seem decent, lowest I've seen for the above MOBO and case

never use alza.co.uk unless you want problems

I'll use the site you recommended

Sending shivers down my spine mentioning that site....
The number of self builds I gave up on and bought an E-machine from PC world instead for people is not even countable on all my families hands.
Despite everyone's advice still going for an i7?
Who's to say future games won't rely on i7 processors... Just future proofing a bit more. Det suggested an i7 setup... And I have an i7 gaming laptop don't want to shy away from what I know is good

As I understand it the advantage of in i7 in faster number crunching but not in pure speed advantage..
I have an i7 on my mac book and things like Photoshop etc run faster because they make such calculations
but for gaming IMHO they are no better than an i5.. I'm tending to believe however, having just bought a gaming rig with an AMD six core CPU, that the choice I made to leave Intel was sound as it's bloody rapid compared to the i5 rig it replaced.
as i said just my opinion

Good to know. I've always been an Intel man since I was 15... So it's hard to make the plunge to AMD

No games will ever rely on an i7, it would be a ridiculous situation. Some may benefit from the extra power but the amount of difference would be a fraction of the amount of difference buying a better graphics card would give.
On a bit of a side note, has anyone ever upgraded a CPU whilst keeping the same mobo? In my history of building systems since my first cyrix 133, I have only ever done it once. Every other time its been a new mobo/cpu/ram at the very least.
ive had amd, bulldozer fx8350 eight core cpu and I can safely say the i7 beats it hands down. yes you could get the latest i5 if you just want gaming, its just as fast as an i7 in gaming, but I like to use photoshop a lot, visual basic, and also video editing software. this is where an i7 comes in handy, less time spent doing the essential work. plus being future proof for the next few years. I'm lucky in that I can test both the i7 and the amd 8350 cpu's side by side atm and I can tell you the intel chip blows the amd away on the majority of tasks.
my advice is to get an i7 while you can, get the best of both worlds, you never know in 2 years time you may want that video editing machine or number cruncher, saves you having to buy twice

The only time I upp'ed a CPU was when I was buying an Athlon XP and at the time they had the Athlon 2600 at the best bang for your buck level but I was reading about the upcoming barton CPUs all the time. As luck would have it, a friend wanted a system after seeing mine, so I built him one with my CPU and got myself a spanking new 2500 Barton about a month later. Didn't make any noticeable difference in performance though to be honest but hey, I got a better benchmark.
right so now im torn between the two motherboards below... keeping in mind I am a fan of Asus's ROG range...
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard : http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...sub-dvi-hdmi-a
and
Asus ROG Z170 Maximus VIII Hero: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...ire-hdmi-atx-m
any of you knowledgeable people help me decide?
Hasn't AMD got a new line up coming out in 2016?

And the difference between those is? Lol

LGA1150=Haswell/i7-4970k=old/not future proof LGA1151=Skylake=new/if the motherboard fechs up in the next few years you'll have a better chance of getting a new one (have a look on Scan for LGA1155 - Sandybridge/Ivybridge & you won't find any in stock)...you can't use a Haswell cpu with a LGA1151
Did you notice the Gigabyte motherboard that you've linked is discontinued?

Yeah I did. I thought it was an older model but want sure
