You gotta threaten to leave. If they sound like they're going to go through with it though just tell them that you need to check with the wife first.

Sky are a pain - I had two contracts going at one point both at full whack - one for the parents and the other for me.

I cancelled mine when saving for a new house and they bombarded me constantly with letters offering 50% off.

Eventually I decided to move the folks to Freesat as they weren't that bothered so I spoke to Sky and said if you'll give me 50% off the one contract that is running I'll stay - all they offered was to cancel the movies and sports and charge me full whack for everything else and they were insistent that I was making up the 50% offer even though I had the letters in front of me with all the details.

It really annoyed me to be honest as I'd been paying full price for over 20 years from the days of analogue satellite and they wouldn't do any deal whereas if I was a new customer they'd throw freebies my way and I'd never missed a single payment.

Suffice to say they got told to stick it and for eight weeks they must have rung me five times a day and they're still calling now.

It's an area that needs real competition and maybe with the move to IPTV we'll see some new competition from somewhere.

They should at least roll out the interface update to the old boxes.

Hopefully, it will mean that virgin gets their act together and makes a new box that works.

Maybe the tivo bolt will be coming, but the interface still looks like the same old shit.

There are still no 1080p channels though for it to display - just sup-SB, SD, 720p, 1080i & UHD unless Sky are planning to change that.

There are still quite a lot of channels broadcast on 28.2e in just 544x576 which makes SD look even worse than it should compared to HD but means Sky can put an extra 30% of crap on there.

Are they planning on outputting 4K channels from Astra? I know there is a channel now on there which looks amazing but it sounds like sky are canning that and going down the online route.

I'm not sure mate - I'm actually moving in a few months and found out the guy two houses down is a director of Sky so I'll see what I can find out as he's got a Q box in already which they've been testing internally. There are 2 or 3 UHD channels on 19.2e too I think which get good feedback.

Got to make sure I don't mention anything about sharing too when I see them otherwise that could be an interesting conversation

I guess if they do start to put any 4k on satellite for the people who can't get it via broadband they'll have to start dropping the bitrate of the existing HD channels to make space and the old stuff is going to look really really bad in comparison!

VU+ boxes with the right image can do most of these functions anyway with miniDNLA and multiple tuners for streaming to tablets etc.

It's a shame that Sky don't let you go and move your card freely between those sorts of boxes - I'm tempted by the Vu 4k box myself for the new house but it's a bit worthless if it can't decode any of the encrypted 4k channels when they finally arrive.

Anything on Atlantic you probably have seen months in advance anyway.
