Default BT's broadband and phone network down in parts of UK

BT's broadband and phone network appears to have been suffering nationwide problems in the UK.
Down detector, a website that monitors internet failures, is reporting thousands of cases in places such as London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Coventry.
There are also numerous reports on social media from customers experiencing issues.
BT confirmed that many of its services were currently not working.
A spokesman said: "It is true that we are down at the moment. We are aware of the problems and are working on them as fast as we can."
Its website has also crashed and some users are reporting that its customer service line is down.
Hundreds of people have taken to social media to express their frustration using the hashtag #BTdown.
"Sorry if your [sic] are experiencing network problems. Engineers are on site now. We will keep you updated," said BT on its official Twitter feed.

I had a flurry of calls, when I was trying to access the service status page it was down, turns out bt.com was down in its entirety! Then rang the automated service status lines and you get disconnected as soon as you select which service. Mad...

Mine was off for a few hours this afternoon. Was in the process of texting a neighbour to see if it was just my problem when it came up on Sky News that it was a UK wide problem. Could be a simple software upgrade that went wrong or a serious hack1ng incident. Maybe something similar to science fiction alien films where they upload a virus to one of the alien drones which then infects the mother ship and then spreads throughout the entire system. Stargate Universe was one such film.

I love it when science fiction becomes a reality. Can't wait for the first invasion from outer space. No I don't have a death wish. I'm hoping to be spared and used as a sex slave by a collective of attractive female aliens with an addiction for the taste of human sperm. (">

Interestingly it does not seem to have affected any other providers using BT backhaul I did not see any service outages today from work, the core MPLS network must have been fine

I'm having serious issues with mine tonight. Can't stream anything for more than 5secs. Fucking annoying as I want to watch the footy.

Most common cause of network failure whether it be ISP or Corporate is always fkin change requests. Someone implements a change, it royally fucks something up and then you have the hassle of a roll back. I suspect either that, a mahoooosive hack or possibly serious of core backbones failed.

Or it could be something stupid like a fkin slug ate a pile of burgerbytes and shat all over the place.

    Thankfully, I ain't on BT

You would be surprised by how many outages are fiber breaks or router hardware failures the worst ones are when ASR routers start flapping, causes all sorts of havoc but the fail overs never kicks in.

What gets me is the Internet lets call it the backbone but there is not really such a thing anymore, is so insanely complex it`s a wonder we don't get more major outages like this, but people play merry hell when they loose their broadband for a few hours they need a reality check.

I remember last year an Indian service provider killed google for half of the internet with a simple BGP routing configuration mistake

Yeah this is true. Contractors going through fibres is certainly not uncommon (in fact far too common), along side RTA's on street cabs for VM / BT etc (seen a fair few of those demolished over the years). I hear ya on the "backbone" thing. To be honest, backbone is just one of those corporate keywords that generally doesn't mean much any more. Like you say, crazy complex now.

LOL the amount of people that go bonkers when they lose connectivity to their internet. I once had to tell an acquaintance to have a word with herself when she kicked off at her service provider asking "WTF are my kids gonna do when they come home from school". I advised her to really take the time to think about that question for a while.

DON'T . Your hassle and stress will increase 10 fold. Left them 2 months ago after 18 months of misery. Your speed will halve and they will blame your internal wiring. That will just be the start. Will NEVER touch Talk Talk again

    Thanks to piggzy

Sounds like a fair description of BT.
