Help Anyone got a Sit on top Kayak ?

    Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a sit on top kayak. I have a long canal and the river Severn right on my doorstep and fancy having a paddle up and down after seeing various people on them when I was in Torquay last weekend.

I have no idea what I'm buying so was wondering if anyone here has one ?

There are some on ebay that come with seat and paddle for £250 all in such as this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1216651757...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

but looking at kayak stores on the net, they seem to run about £375 plus a paddle on top.

Anyone have any tips or know if the cheaper one will do me ? I only need something basic but don't want to buy it if it's not going to be any good.

    cheers,

    malty

I've been enjoying the second season of Alone, and one of the contestants has made his own kayak type boat. Incredible to see someone build something from scratch while trying to survive in the wilds of Vancouver Island with no food and just a few basic tools.

Not that I'm suggesting you do the same Malty, probably easier to buy one if you can. Alone is worth a watch though for those who haven't seen it. I'm not a fan of reality shows as a rule, but this has none of the bullshit or histrionics you usually get.

We recently enjoyed The Island with Bear Grylls (which fortunately didn't have much BG in it) so we'll give that a go too thanks mate.

On your recommendation I've started watching this from season one, great show and quite harrowing at times.

There are some smart guys in this show too.

    Thanks to Ashley

It's not quite what you are looking for but depending on your size these are amazing value for money, mines still going strong after 3 years and I was out on our local canal with it again this week and I have also been out on the river too. loads of us bought one, only one person had problem with theirs but they are larger so I think that had something to do with it. They come with a pump and paddle.

I'm after a kayak mate and can't justify 300 quid for one. Do toy think these would be suitable for the likes of the norfolk broads? Worried about branches/logs ripping them open

Shame you didn't post this a few months ago when we were clearing out my Grans garage and we sent 3 kayaks and a canoe to the tip we couldn't find anyone who wanted them even local scout groups wouldn't take them.

I haven't been for a paddle for years after changing cars no way of transporting them. But if I was buying now I would not buy an open top/sit on top kayak if it was my only boat. Eventually you will want to be doing more than just flat water and the sit on just don't work for that, not so bad on the sea but rapids, fast water etc no use in my opinion. And you may not be able to climb on at some points and need to drop in to the water from the land (seal launch) or go down some weirs even white water.

I had a couple of piranha boats mountain bat and a magic bat which I loved and really old pointy fibreglass thing which was interesting as it would get less pointy if you hit any rocks to hard or become a submarine but fairly easy to repair. They are all old school boats to be honest and the newer stuff is wider and more stable so less likely to roll over but they look weird to me very short and cramped, defiantly no room for your lunch and bag in them any more. Piranha did a sort of convertible boat back in the 90's had a plastic cover that made the deck full or could be removed and was more of an open boat like you are considering, no idea if they still do such a thing. I remember the biggest fear was rolling and not being able to get out but it was never an issue.

Making me want to buy another now and get back out on the water thinking about it. was talking to some blokes at the weekend while shooting a triathlon they were the swim marshals on the water.

As its your first boat I would look at buying 2nd hand rather than new you will get something much better than buying basement price new boats.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

I would take in your height and weight as to what length you are looking for mate. I would think an inflatable would be ok on a canal, maybe even on the Severn if you live somewhere where it doesn't have much of a tide rip, swell or other boat traffic.

Go out in my kayak when possible.

Although its a sit in. Bout £500 i paid.

Genuinely you get what you pay for, like having a keel. It helps keep you straight. Storage.. comfortable seat.

Paid £100 just for a paddle lol. (That was more then i was willing to pay for the kayak at first)

Bearing in mind, i had never tried it.

But of we went, out to sea. Its a absolute doddle.

Im always dragging mine about, a inflatable would of popped first outing tbh

Decent ones hold there value also in 2nd hand market.

Im not sure what the broads are like but these are much more durable than I was expecting, can't go wrong for the price even if it is to get a taste before committing to a higher spend. If you buy from Amazon rather than a third party I imagine you will be covered by their warranty which is usually no questions asked.
