We don't get up that way much sadly but thank you for the very kind offer. I'd be scared of breaking someone else's kit though.

I was in Hereford, well remembered, but am now in Gloucester.

Okey dokey. When you do decide which kit to buy one early tip I read was buy a UV (plain) filter for the front of your lens to protect it. I bought a few cleaning items, one was a rocket shaped blower and another was a lens pen which has a suede like end that gets dosed with carbon inside the lid. You'd be surprised how effectively it removes finger prints. I also have a polarising filter, I'd advise buying one straight away. It can completely remove reflections, you need to see it to believe how effective it is. For example I took a photo of a puddle, then rotated the filter and it removes the reflective surface. I was a complete plank a couple of months ago on a steam train in Wales taking photos I forgot about the polarising filter and ended up with reflections from inside the carriage. We had great seats too. The filter improves photos which have the sky in the background, ones with blue sky and clouds are the best. It also acts as a reducer, removing brightness (like sunglasses) so exposure time needs to increase a little. As I said earlier in the thread I don't use it enough. I will definitely get out there this summer.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

I have a polarising filter already that I use with my bridge camera. Turn it 90 degrees and the picture changes entirely. Love it!

Thanks guys I think I will have to go take some advice in a store and spend some time with each camera in my hands

Having read a lot more I'm now leaning quite heavily towards the canon m3 or more likely the m10 they seem to fit my bill nicely. Does anyone have any experience of those ?

I have an original Canon EOS M, and it's a very nice camera, auto focus is not the quickest but it works for what i need it for, it's small and very capable, i have Magic lantern installed on it and it's exceptionally good for video if that's your thing, plus via an adapter you can use Canon glass.

i've read the newer M's are a lot quicker at auto focusing.

Malty it may be worth you signing up to talk photography, they have a whole thread there for the EOS M's.

unless its significantly cheaper than the Sony/Fuji/Panasonic, I cant see why you'd choose the Canon. I had a glance around before I got my Fuji and the M or M2 (whatever was current at the time) was always criticized for its poor lens line up and lacking spec, although image quality itself was always praised. The original M was insanely cheap here, like 150 quid cheap but the reviews put me well off.

Seems to be £100-200 less spec for spec wise although I'm still not 100% what all the terms mean lol

    Still can't decide. I keep flick flacking between the M3, M10, 1200D, 1300D and even the 750D.

I also like the olympus epl-7 for the retro looks 909 seems to like.

What I do know is that I would like the wifi sharing ability, so it'll have to have that I think. I also definitely want a longish lens as mentioned in the first post after playing with a few in Jessops today. I know the EF-M lenses are few and far between (and expensive) but I have also seen that you can buy an adaptor for EF and EF-S lenses to fit.

Curently mostly looking at a M10 or an M3 with half an eye on a 100D.

I do seem to have gone off the Nikon's a bit, no idea why as my first expensive digital camera years ago was a Nikon coolpix 990 and I adored it.

What I do know is that my missus is pleading with me to just buy one already so I can get on with it ! I need to make a decision or I need for a killer deal to come up.

    cheers.

when I bought my nikon I weighed up the whole package that I'd want to buy (even though affording it all was years off), and pretty much like you I wanted a longish tele, a walkabout lens (wide to mid tele zoom) and possibly an ultra wide. When i totaled up the cost of comparable gear from Nikon and Canon, the Nikon stuff was significantly cheaper and in head to head reviews, although it wasn't clear cut, the nikon stuff usually had the edge. Bearing in mind that any of the semi/pro kit is still way higher quality than I'll ever need, I just went for the cheapest option.

I'd suggest doing the same and dont focus too much on the IQ in the reviews, unless the review states its near useless. Tech reviews these days are a minefield of bullshit.

But, as I said, the allure of the pro kit has all but worn out on me now and 9 times out of 10 i carry my Fuji, and if I hadn't had it stolen, I'd still just be swinging my X100 around with its fixed 23mm lens.

doing a very brief search, the Sony A5100 is $1 more than the M3 with their kit lenses (US prices). With the Sony having better ISO performance, longer battery life, faster burst rate, faster burst duration and a wider selection of lenses. Go team Sony!

Had a look but am Struggling to find 5100 available anywhere in the uk. I picked up a couple of the Sony cameras which I presume were 5000 and 6000 and they felt tiny to me, also they seemed to be a fair lump more than I am hoping to pay in total. Undoubtedly nice kit and with a great quality feel, just tiny and relatively expensive

I've just taken the plunge and gone for the Panasonic GX8 with the 14-140mm lense. £849 from SLRHut (US company). Cheapest by quite a bit, but not eligible for the cashback currently offered.

Some of the Canons you mention are not strictly a DSLR as they are mirrorless however there are some very good mirrorless cameras out now that still give you choice of lens.. the M3 is classed as a compact
but I think it would suit you as it has lots of new features.
The 750D is a conventional DSLR whiles the Sony A5100 is also mirrorless.
I went with Sony when I bought my first camera gear but became disenchanted with it and sold it with all the lenses and moved to Canon.
I now have a Canon 5D and a 70D with several lenses and loads of other gear.
I do like the newest generations of Panasonic, and Fuji mind you and have great difficulty not acquiring one LOL...
You will have great fun whichever you choose..

Rightly or wrongly and egged on by the missus to just go for it, I've gone for the one that's most taken my fancy throughout. The higher end mirror less canon one, the m3.

I have gone a bit bigger than anticipated as I stumbled across a bundle deal in a specialist store that included everything I wanted in one go. Camera, 18-55mm IS lens, including the optional viewfinder (which was a bit of a sticking point in my head) and also a 55-200mm IS lens. Total price, £699 but with £45 cash back to come from canon. Total selling price for it all would be more like £850 if separate so I'm really happy with that.

Without this thread I probably wouldn't have even considered mirror less so thank you everyone for your input. Can't wait to learn how to use it all properly !

    Cheers,

Loving my camera, really enjoying experimenting.

Well only a few days in and I've already expanded the lens collection. Bought a 10-18mm ef-s is stm lens with the hope of capturing some landscapes.

I bought a really nice hama bag when I bought the camera but it's already too small so if anyone has a recommendation for a bag for a CSC and 3 lenses and the associated gubbins then please let me know.

Also I'd like to know what software people use. I have installed trial copies of lightroom and photoshop but am wondering what else (if anything) people use.

    cheers,

If you want to learn photography, looking for youtube tutorials on specific styles isn't the way to go, but its what 90% of people with new cameras do.

Learning those light trail shots and figuring out how to produce bokeh only goes so far into impressing people.

Focus on learning the basics of composition and exposure, there's some great books available and they all basically preach the same info so find one you feel comfortable with and spend a few days absorbing it. Admittedly aperture, shutter speed and ISO do seem foreign and sometimes pointless to newcomers, but you wont find a photographer whose been shooting for a few years who will tell you they're not vital to learn.

As for software, I would guess that lightroom would be best if you have no previous experience with PS, as a user of PS for over 10 years, I find LR a chore as it does a lot of the same things, just differently, although that may be easier and more flexible than PS, I'm too accustomed to PS after all these years. But, I wouldn't spend more than a few minutes on each shot when it comes to editing, focus on getting the shot right in camera and not in post.

    Thanks to {{909}}
