Reality Why did my drill break?

I bought a new 18v cordless SDS drill but it broke the first time I used it.
I wanted a 15cm hole cut in the wall so I bought a core drill and an arbor.
Do you think it was faulty or the job was too tough for that model?

what was the wall made of?
Did you try and cut through in one go?
Holes of that diameter take time, especially through brick/concrete: Did you lean on the drill to try and speed up process?
    Any sparking/overheating from drill?

In my experience you need a corded drill for any substantial drilling into the wall.

I'll use my 18v cordless as a screwdriver, and for drilling the occasional 6mm hole into a soft wall......but anything requiring a bit of power needs to be corded.

Corded core drill for that job - http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/core-drill-240v you may be better renting one for a day if you only need it for one hole. The only other way you will get away with using an sds is by stitch drilling it. Basically draw your circle out and drill 6mm holes all round it and knock it out with a cold chisel. Done plenty like that myself when stuck. But the simple answer to your question is yes the job was far far too big for it.

A mid sized 110v Hitli from the hire shop should do the trick, they will also have quality diamond core attachments for a small fee, the most ive done with my stanley fatmax cordless 18v is cavity wall drilling for sat cables etc, no more than 12mm diam , it does this with ease but wouldn't want to stress it any further

It was a chimney that had been bricked up. I think it's breeze block type stuff. The drill got about 1 cm deep and smoke came out of the vents.

Then as others have said, you really need a corded drill bud from what you've said above

A 150mm core drill would also put too great a strain on a standard corded sds+ drill. For around £20 - £25 most hire shops will supply a 150mm core drill bit complete with a heavy duty sds+ or sds max drill for this type of job. Should be used on slow speed with hammer action off, and you should take your time with light pressure rather than trying to force it.

Another tip when using a sds max heavy duty tool: You should keep your finger on the trigger ready to cut the power and not engage the ON lock button because once the bit is a few inches into the wall it can sometimes jam and stall if you are not holding the drill perfectly square with the hole, and with the ON lock button engaged it will be the power tool and possibly you spinning rather than the bit. What make/model and where did you get it from?

I need a corded drill just for one job, tempting to get one of these then just send it back once I'm done / it's done.

I got a makita 8460 off ebay and a minute later I had a beautifully neat 15cm hole in the wall. Even used the sds arbor.
So I've learned a hard lesson, all drills are not the same.
