Default RetroPie - Raspberry Pi 3

    RetroPieWebsiteLogo.png

    Hi guys,

I have been playing around with the latest RetroPie for the Rpi3, gotta say I am very impressed so far.
Installation couldn't be easier, write image to MicroSD card, pop the card in the Rpi3 and it will install everything for you.
It will also expand the filesystem to use all available space on the MicroSD card.
Emulators will only show if Roms are found in the relevant folders so you dont see extra stuff you dont want.

I am using a 128GB MicroSD card for the Rpi3 and I am storing all non-ISO roms on here, ISO's are stored on 2 low profile USB sticks (128GB each).
You can update easily and get the latest versions of the emulators, you can also install some experimental emulators (Saturn, 3DO, Nintendo DS etc.).
For the controllers I am using a wireless Xbox 360 game pad and one of the Microsoft USB wireless receivers - works great!

I have had very good experiences with all the emulators below apart from (N64, Sony PSP - both are slow in most games, and the Dreamcast one works but has crashed a few times).

    Internal MicroSD Card (128GB)
    - Sega SG-1000
    - GameGear
    - Master System
    - Mega Drive
    - 32x
    - GameBoy
    - GameBoy Color
    - GameBoy Advance
    - GameBoy
    - Nes
    - SNES
    - N64
    - Amstrad CPC
    - Arcade / Roms
    - Neo Geo
    - Neo Geo Pocket Colour
    - Vectrex
    - Ports (Duke Nukem, Doom etc. - compiled for Rpi)
    - Ms Dos Games

    - - Blood
    - - Doom
    - - Doom 2
    - - Duke Nukem - Duke it out in DC
    - - Lesuire Suit Larry (1 - 6)
    - - Quake
    - - Redneck Rampage
    - - Shadow Warrior
    - - Star Wars: Dark Forces
    - - Theme Hospital
    - - Theme Park

    USB Memory Stick #1 (128GB)
    -
    Sony PSP ISO's
    - Sony Playstation ISO's

    USB Memory Stick #2 (128GB)
    -
    SegaCD ISO's
    - Sega Dreamcast ISO's

I have nearly completed Resident Evil 2 on the Playstation Emulator, a few minor issues (e.g. when the crocodile attacks and the room etc. shakes the players character did flicker a bit but it wasnt anything that affected gameplay) and I have tested various games with each emulator and they do work great on the whole.

    Costs:
    Raspberry Pi 3 Kit (£42) - Rpi3 + 16GB micro sd card, Wall charger (2.5A) & official case
    128GB MicroSD Card (£37)
    128GB Usb Stick (x2) (£25 each)
+ Controllers I already had lying around.

    Total Cost: £129

has anyone else been having a play?
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I've set one up a couple of weeks ago but not really played much, was struggling with a N64 goldeneye going very slow.

I used a PS3 controller and bought a cheap one for the older nes and mega drive ones.

    Have you got Mame working?

yeah but only tested a few (Moonwalker, Golden Axe, Snow Bros, Alien storm) - i think you need to get the right mame rom set to make sure it works

I've been looking at building a Gameboy Zero for a while now. Pulled the trigger and ordered some bits when I got in last night (damn you alcohol). I priced it up at around £100 for parts.
We'll see if it actually gets finished or it just sits in my parts drawer like most my unfinished projects.

For those interested (and to see if I've missed anything) here are the parts required.

    Shell £5.93
    buttons £3
    silicon pads £4
    LB/RB £1.60
    screen £13.96
    volume wheel £0.99
    Power board £18
    Battery £8
    Power switch £0.77
    headphone socket £1.47
    Control pad PCB £20
    Micro USB breakout board £2.50
    teensy lc £11.50
    Raspberry pi zero £6.50
    SD card 0

If anyone wants the links to the parts let me know.

I've just seen the one on the pi blog page. How much actual fabrication work is needed ? The one I saw had 4 face buttons and rear bottoms etc. Looked very impressive like the retro portables that Ben bloke used to make

You need a dremmal to remove the battery housing and to grind down a few places. Other than that it's mostly soldering.

    Edit:

Btw people are making custom PCBs that have templates for the drill holes for the front buttons.

You could use something like the Neo Geo X Controller - usb version of the Neo Geo AES controller
Might not have enough buttons if your wanting to use it for something like street fighter

You can find a few USB Arcade Sticks on Ebay but alot of them look pretty shit

Forgot to say I spent some time over the weekend completing Resident Evil 2 + 3 on the PSX emulator, had no major issues apart from some minor graphical glitches during some of the cut-scenes but otherwise was perfectly playable.

    RetroArch-0829-084234.png

Then tried Star Wars: Dark Forces and got the following graphics glitch:

    RetroArch-0829-143812.png

Will give some other games a proper play-through when i get a chance

It's all just arrived. Just downloading the retropie image. Chucked the noobs sd card in the pi to test everything and my 2 yr old is happily browsing youtube on the installed browser. Impressive that the board now includes wifi and bluetooth. Can it bluetooth to a ps3 controller for retropie as I definitely have one of those lying around ?
