Default New GPU. Northbridge Temps Very High

Recently upgraded my GPU to a R9 390X 8Gb and the Northbridge on my Motherboard is getting so hot, the motherboard shuts itself off.

Definitely nothing to do with my Corsair 750w PSU. So gather it's because the GPU is pulling more power.

Is there a way to solve it or should I now also replace my Motherboard?
    It's a Gigabyte GA-970-US3.

Is it the same motherboard that you were using when your previous card failed? What temperatures are you reaching when the PC shuts down? Have you been using it with the onboard graphics? Is the 390 blowing hot air directly back in to the case?

Just to add. The 390x can run in excess of 90 degrees. The AMD CPU can also run above 50C. That is a lot of heat that can test a case with a good air flow set up, let alone a PC system that is 5+ years old.

Are all your M/B heatsink's clear of any build up of dust, & has your case got any ventilation. A pic a of rig would hep.

Computer is clean as a whistle. I'm borderline OCD when I comes to this thing.

    As you can see.
Watercooled via H80i. Air flow from the front via 2 Fans and pushed out the back through the H80i.

    CPU idols around 27 degrees.
GPU is currently at 32 degress. Both fans spinning.

Everything is perfect, apart from the Northbridge gets fucking hot!

Damn that's one squeaky clean looking motherboard. I cant find any info on a Gigabyte GA-970-US3 but the Gigabyte GA-970a-UD3 seems to have a reputation for running high northbridge temps. However this shouldn't effect stability, if it does then there's something wrong. If the board is out of warranty and cant be RMA'd then you could have a go at pulling the northbridge heat-sink off and re-seating it with new thermal paste. Install HW Monitor first and get some before and after temps.

    Gigabyte = Giga SHITE

I would whip the heatsink off, re-do the thermal paste.
You could also see if they are any BIOS updates / email
    Gigabyte.
Can you drop the northbridge voltage ?

Seeing as it's running shit and after reading numerous reports of Gigabyte northbridge getting hot. I've invested in an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0. (Military Grade, so I'm told! Haha)

    I was due a newun!

I was gonna suggest turning off your onboard graphics and just making sure your RAM was the correct speed/frequency and Voltage.

i had the same card & mother board with H80i cooling, got rid of the so called water cooling & had no problems with NBridge after that,
i now run AMD Asrock 970 extreme 4 board & gtx 1070 card, no problems with heat now.

I'm thinking first thing would be as MHP suggested, redo thermal paste.

If no real difference then you could try sticking a little fan on the north bridge heatsink, or even create a duct to try and channel more air from the rear case fan over it. I've made surprisingly effective ducts using cardboard and sellotape a couple of times. You could also try a Peltier element, I've thought about these for various projects a couple of times but never actually messed with them.

Did you ditch the H80i and go back to air cooling? I was thinking of 'upgrading' my Noctua NH-U12P but these AIO liquid coolers seem to be style over substance.

I agree. Fixed a chaps PC 3 weeks ago as his water cooling setup had failed and cooked his mobo & cpu. He went back to air cooled. I feel more comfortable as you can easily see and to a degree hear if there is a problem. With this he got no warning.

PC suddenly said overheating and shutdown instantly. Was already too late .

Top end Asus mobo and core i7 in the bin lol

    Thanks to piggzy

    Fucking things still doing it.
Installed HW Monitor and a large fan right above the northbridge sitting on my GPU.

This is the current temps with the fan directly above -

Hopefully this fixes it til my new Mobo arrives.

I don't think any amount of paste will help. Its the Heatsink thats getting hot! Heat transfer doesn't seem to be the problem. Maybe lack of airflow, which is strange because its like a tornado now!

Are your voltages stable on the motherboard? The H80i consists of 2 fans and the pump and its powered off of the MB CPU fan header. Add a power hungry card like the R9 390 and you could be stressing things a bit to much. Try running the H80i directly off of the PSU if you can.

Are you sure that Tmpin2 is the North bridge ? I had over heating issue's & shut downs earlier on in the year which turned out to be my Corsair water cooler pump failing.
Boot into your Bios, and check the temps & fan speeds. In my case, it was slow, then off, then fine for while until next boot. The following boot, iyjr pump would sometimes never come on at all.

Clutching at straws, but here's a possibility.

Have you tried using different power connectors from the same power supply, incase you are overloading a rail causing the card to draw as much as it can through the mobo instead?

Turns out it was my H80i Coolers pump had gone all along! The north bridge, sitting right next to the CPU was receiving the brunt of the heat.

Still, new board was due anyway.

Luckily, H80i has a 5 year warranty as standard and Corsair agree to replace it (again). My last one, the tubes were erroding!
