just had a quick read of this thread and came to the only conclusion i could, who gives a flying fuck?
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. very true, I was thinking about this last night actually when someone on the TV pronounced 'Lidl' correctly as in lee-dal where we just call it 'Lid-dul' - must be a midlands thing

Ted rides a Harley. Is it Chris' Harley ? It can't possibly be Ted's Harley as that's not his name (assumed, common or otherwise), so is it therefore Ted Harley ? (As per "Asda Store")

No of course not. It's Ted's Harley, and our Ted would come after you with a bike chain (and share a cider with you afterwards) to prove the fact.

Of course it is Ted's Harley because you are referring to something that belongs to him. Doesn't change his name to Ted's though, his name is still Ted. Just as in it is Asda's cheese until you pay for it. The shop is still called Asda though.

We aren't talking about vehicles belonging to Asda. I would happily accept say for an example a truck belong to Asda is one of Asda's Trucks.

Would you refer to your friend Ted as Ted's

The only way I can see Asda's making sense when referring to stores is if we are referring to a particular Asda's store belonging to Asda. But then we need to use the word store/shop/etc to make that usage correct.

Asda isn't a store it's a company. When people say Asda's they are referring to a store belonging to a company.

So as I previously posted, it would be correct to say I am going to Asda's Store in Hounslow for example. But if I just say I am going to Asda's in Hounslow, am I going to Asda's store? Asda's carpark? Asda store delivery van 1? Asda store delivery van 2? Asda truck that came from distribution centre that happens to be in Hounslow at this moment? Asda's unknown office? etc.

In order to correctly use Asda's, we need to refer to something that belongs to Asda. Just saying Asda's doesn't let us know which possession of Asda we are referring to, therefore does not technically make any sense. </pedantry>

That's just being obtuse for the sake of it. You (and everyone else) know "I'm going to Asda's" means I'm going to the store (and probably the car park) belonging to (AND known as) Asda.

Weird how it's supermarkets only. If someone is going to Next or New Look they will not say Nexts or New Looks.

However.. Following on from Malty :
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls.[10] The Tesco name first appeared in 1924, after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from T. E. Stockwell and combined those initials with the first two letters of his surname,[11] and the first Tesco store opened in 1931 in Burnt Oak, Barnet.[12][13][14] His business expanded rapidly, and by 1939 he had over 100 Tesco stores across the country.[15]

so TESCO's would also be acceptable as it's a store owned by someone as would LIDL :
Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG (German pronunciation: [ˈliːdəl]; UK /ˈlɪdəl/ lid-əl), formerly Schwarz Unternehmens Treuhand KG, is a German global discount supermarket chain, based in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany,[1] that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe. It belongs to the holding company Schwarz Gruppe, which also owns the store chains Handelshof and hypermarket Kaufland.

Other stores such as Aldi have no similar founding name

Years ago (fifteen years to be semi-exact) I was selling a car on auto trader and this fella phoned up sounding a bit daft. Anyway we got talking and for some reason he asked me if I worked at "The Rover" as in the car factory.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

I always though it was just an easier way of shorting down the 2 words and instead of saying - "Excuse me my dear, I'm just going to Asda Supermarket for some Semi-Skimmed milk, do we require anything further?"
We all turned it into - "Oi love, just popping to Asdas for some milk & fags. Want some beer or wine?"

Just the posh cunts still call them Asda or Tesco.

Digging up a year old thread too, I had a double take on the day there for a minute! Almost to the very day!

    Edit:
Did you sign up and literally search for Asda??
