    Default Fiverr

Has anyone used Fiverr - http://www.fiverr.com/ ? Stumbled across it earlier. It is basically a service that offers a variety of stuff for $5 a time.
I have bought a couple to try out this afternoon so will see how they go.

I really like the idea but I guess it is limited to certain things like logo design, cartoon versions of yourself etc..

Will post my thoughts when I get the results of my first purchase.

    Yeah I've used it twice.

First was to do a cartoon sketch of the Mrs to go on the front of a birthday card.

Second time was to get this guy to sing happy birthday on camera dressed up doing impressions - Well worth the cash.

Used a few times, a caricature, a bit of SEO, a few logos (which I didn't really like and edited myself after but it was cheap inspiration and recently a PSD to responsive HTML5 using Bootstrap!)
Well worth the cash I'd say too.

I'm pretty sure there are some bandits on there too, passing off other peoples logos as their own work.
You just gotta use your judgement and expect that for what £3.50? You're sometimes gonna get exactly £3.50's worth of work in return.

Not exactly.. They have pre-recorded specialist videos of which you choose one that works for you.
They video's range from amateur to professional and even some animated ones if you like that style.

I often flick through in cubicle 2 at work every other day and have a watch of one for about 30 seconds (including buffering time).

No money involved unless you want a VIP style membership. I have not taken the plunge yet so I am not sure what the benefits are.

this is pretty cool, theres been a number of times I've wanted a caricature or similar doing and although I know people who could do it, getting them to actually lift a finger is near impossible.

Even though I never claimed china was or is a third world country it is often referred to as one.

No-one forces them to sign up.

If they have ended up on the site, they've probably put some thought into whether it's worth their while before taking the plunge.

Now if someone is getting a reasonable sum for a task, no one is being exploited.

If a person for example has a regular job and just wants a bit of extra pocket money I wouldn't call it exploitation.

However if a person has exhausted all avenues to gain meaningful employment and has ended up on here, I may consider that person is being exploited. However they possible are committing benefit fraud, and the real problem is why these people aren't able to find suitable work and find this site attractive.

Then there is also the possibility the buyer could get exploited (ripped off, given substandard work, charged a fiver for 10secs work, etc).

Also I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people would be getting paid less to complete the task if they were in a sweatshop, so things like this could actually help drive up average wages and living standards.

Just thought I would end off saying that I looked at a similar (maybe the same) site a while ago, and there seemed to be a surprising amount of Americans offering services. If a fivers good enough for a 1st world citizen, then it should also be good enough for a 3rd world citizen.

In fact I thought I would just go over to check what nationalities were making use of the service.

Most of the people seem to be from developed/1st world countries, yet this site is letting people from the 3rd world offer their services on a level playing field where they can receive the same payment as people in the 1st world would for the same task. Seems like a pretty decent thing to do, and I would love an coherent explanation of how this constitutes exploitation.

The only real problem I can see here is someone trying to put everyone else down and make himself appear superior even though he doesn't even have a leg to stand on in this argument.

This will probably change if I refreshed, but here were the nationalities of service providers on the front page when I just looked.

Appear superior? You mean it didn't work? Shit.

All you have to do is ask yourself if you'd do the same work for $5, although I suspect it's much less as no doubt the site takes it's cut. So, would you? You'll probably say yes just to be an argumentative cunt.

I wouldn't and I wouldn't feel right paying someone less than minimum wage. I think it's called ethics. Look it up.

I agree with CJ on ethics side, someone will to do say an hours work for $5 is devaluing the economy and being exploited by the site. No different to sweat shops and slave labour IMO, also are these workers likely to be compensating income from benefit or social fraud etc ??

fair price for a fair job i believe in but seems in today's market too many people are unaware of the impact this sort of thing has
can you really expect to get a professional product demonstration or professional voice over for $5

yep hands up i would never do one of those task above for $5

dont forget minimum wage is over $7 an hour in usa and heading for $10 in next two years

$10 seems a better idea and at least more ethical in terms of providing a service at or around the minimum wage
