England Women: Toni Duggan 'sorry' for Sister Act party outfit

    By Jessica CreightonBBC Sport

England forward and anti-racism campaigner Toni Duggan has apologised for painting her face black and dressing up as film star Whoopi Goldberg for a fancy dress party.
The Manchester City Ladies striker, a Kick It Out ambassador, imitated Goldberg's character in Sister Act.
"I am very sorry for my actions and for any offence I may have caused," said 22-year-old Duggan.
"We are aware of the images," said an England spokesperson.
"We have asked for the photos to be removed and are dealing with the matter internally."
Photos of the England players, some of whom were dressed at the team party as pop stars from the Spice Girls and Edward Scissorhands, were posted on their Twitter and Instagram social media accounts before later being removed.
Duggan, part of a 24-strong England squad competing in the Cyprus Cup, an annual international friendly tournament, added: "I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to England, my club and anyone else that I may have offended.
"I am proud to be a 'Next 20' ambassador for Kick It Out and take this role very seriously for an organisation that does such good work."
The striker has been in good form of late, helping the national side to a perfect start in their World Cup 2015 qualifying campaign in which they have scored 20 goals in four games and conceded none.
They play their first game of the tournament in Cyprus on Wednesday against Italy (15:30 GMT).
England face Finland on Friday, before on Monday playing World Cup hosts Canada, whom they beat in last year's final.

I've often wondered why 'blacking up' is offensive. If you are doing it in order to reinforce a negative stereotype, then fair enough. It's clearly wrong. But simply applying make-up to look like a particular character has never seemed wrong to me. In fact, as Whoopi is the hero in this instance, it's actually a form of fan worship and reinforces the character's positive attributes.

Too quickly they have come out to apologise yet I fail to see what they need to apologise about..
This is now a documented example of 'racism' in the sport.. How long before a player makes an impression or parody of a movie scene, but they are not the right race/sex and it becomes a problem.

The whole thing is going backwards.. If you scratch at something for too long you make it worse, did none of them listen to their mums!

She is one of the nicer women footballers so rather than cover up in a nun habit I would rather she had dressed up as barbarella ;-)

Edward Scissorhands on the Left Whited up, the only one who should be apologising is Mel B who didn't bother to black up.

So by this same logic, dressing up like and painting your face like a clown is offensive to clowns?

    All them damn fasict kids...

And as for the girl being "sorry", more like sorry for getting photographed and it being leaked to the public... I doubt she or anyone else gives a shit. The football bosses/sponsers however will have an issue.

They tweeted it. It wasn't leaked. It's not like a Nazi outfit. No-one saw any harm until some beardy idiots decided to moan.

    Thanks to Geko
