Kearvaig Bay Photos and Skye Bridge

Kearvaig Bay Bothy - 5 miles from Cape Wrath (and our accommodation for the evening).

For those whom are unsure what a bothy is, they're travellers huts. Some are wooden, some are made of stone. This one in particular is probably one of the best, if not the best Bothy you can go to. Maintained by the MBA (Mountain Bothys Association), they have no luxuries such as Heating, Running Water, Electricity, Toilets or Beds. You bunk down on the floor (or on some benches along the wall inside) on your roll mat and sleeping bag. In this one there is a table for eating at and there are two fireplaces for building wood fires.

No modern luxuries however the bothy is free to use, requires no booking and has equipment such as saws, axes to chop drift wood etc. and also has a toilet spade for digging a hole .

Looking towards Cape Wrath through a little tunnel I made in a miniature sand cliff caused by the tide.

f/22, 1/50th. Not often I use F22 but needed as much DoF as possible as I was about 12 inches away from the sand wall and tunnel through it. Wanted to get near to far in focus.



Skye Bridge - Kyle of Lochalsh. I do have some other shots that are very flat and boring looking. Will see if I can do something with them

I do like those Scottish mountain ranges (however you can see that cloud cover moving in)

If you ever get the chance, I'd very much recommend a trip to Cape Wrath and a night in the Bothy at Kearvaig. I've been there 3 times now and it's always a superb place to go. Would recommend May though as each time I've been, we've had excellent weather.

Yeah basically, they're a travellers hut. They're almost always in very remote locations so you don't get your average 2 Adult 4 Kids Family turning up with caravans, awnings etc. I believe there are some you need to call up and enquite about to see if there is anyone in there because some of them are very small (single room size).

This particular one would sleep maybe 4 or 5 in one room, 2 in a small box room downstairs. Then, upstairs, there are two rooms that could easily sleep 4 in each. The other door to the right leads to a separate standalone room that two could sleep in easily.

First time we went, there were 4 lads from Newcastle staying in there. Decent guys, had a real good laugh with those guys. 2nd time there was a Spanish guy whom had down hundreds of miles of hiking and an 84 year old Woman and her Scottie dog (she walked up one of the real big hills nearby and then over to the Cape Wrath lighthouse - respect).
This time, it was just me and my mate in the bothy. You do have to consider however that if you ever go to a bothy that requires no prior contact (such as this one), that there may be other travellers and you may actually have to share a room if there's quite a few. It'd have to be a big group and unfortunate timing though).


The rules of the Bothy are basically, keep it tidy (if it's been left untidy by previous occupants, do the decent thing and give it a quick tidy around), don't leave the doors open if you're the last one to leave. Do any of your business away from the bothy, not near a stream and definitely not upstream of the bothy . Do it into a hole and cover it afterwards.

If you have any spare unopened water, non-perishable supplies, matches, gas etc. that you don't need or wish to offload, it's always appreciated if they're left for future visitors (whom may be either unprepared or running low, or whom have had to actually seek shelter unexpectedly)
