My First Milky Way

...Spent a few nights in Kirkby Malzeard with some friends. My intention upon sticking the camera outside and pointing up at the sky was to take a series of shots for star trails.... only this happened

60seconds @ f3/5, ISO 3200.
FL: 10mm

In hindsight, 60 seconds was probably a bit too long as you can see the evidence of trailing but I was lucky enough to capture an Iridium flare from an Iridium Satellite as you can see in the image.

Well, there are 66 satellites up there so getting one in your shot is pretty surprising! A good bonus methink.

Looks great, some nice colour and so many stars!

Cheers dude. I'm fkin over the moon (no pun intended) with this. Light pollution was still bad but I was able to cut a lot of it out in PP. If anything was to make me consider Full frame, it would be stuff like this.

Ps, I've lost a few of the stars with a bit of noise reduction but I think that helps the milky way to show through even more.

I use a Astronomik CLS filter in my Canon to try and stop the LP here,works really well on 5 minute exposures I'm doing at the moment

Oily, as a matter of interest, it's a screw on filter but I'm sturggling to find information on diameter. For example, my 10-22mm EF-S lens is a 77mm Filter size (and I can't use the clip in filter because it doesn't support EF-S Lenses). Which one do you have and what lens are you using it on? Bear in mind I'm not using a telescope, just my Canon 10-22mm lens. I'd have liked the clip in filter but the incompatibility with EF-S lenses is a pain.

Also, what kind of level of light pollution does it reduce? For example, that MW shot above was taken in a Village in Yorkshire where light pollution was lower but still significantly bad. Would I be able to use it at my home where Light pollution is as bad as you would expect from a suburban area?

Mine is the clip in type,use the scope as a lense,shame about the EF-S lenses though
The filter does it's job really well with the LP I have here,I'm just on the outskirts of Manchester so I consider myself lucky with regards to LP,it's not to bad,could be better though!
I'll post some RAW pics up later on when I've finished this imaging session,show you what a 10 minute sub looks like before any processing etc.

Sorry for the late reply DPsparhawk,This is a 10min exposure at ISO800 with the CLS filter fitted.

ps,my sensor needs cleaning

Have you looked at the Hoya range of screw in filters?The Didymium RED INTENSIFIER Enhancing Filter seems to be the one thats good unless you're feeling flush then the Hutech filters are the daddy!
