    Question UK folks on EE

I seem to get the idea that if I send a text with a smiley or any other emoji or emote in it then I will be charged 33p for the text as EE changes the text from SMS to MMS. Is this correct?

If I add a smiley in Facebook, twitter, or WhatsApp, I assume because they are "external" forms of contact, then no charges can be applied?

This gets on my nerves. The only safe was is either Whats App or iMessage on the iPhone. But even that can be hit or miss depending on your signal and if it decides to send as a 'Text message'

Are you 'attaching' it Bb? As in selecting it from somewhere? I've not experienced that myself. I can type a colon and a bracket for a smiley and sometimes Android turns it into an Androidy smiley but it still goes as SMS. I know if you attach anything though it goes as MMS (image, contact card etc).
But yeah, the MMS charge is shite. I use (when I have to tbh, nearly everyone I message uses whatsapp these days) a character counter so I don't go beyond 3 SMS's into an MMS and go out of the free text allowance.
It's a rare thing for me to receive an MMS too. Usually pissed mates sending photos!

I just have the Kiki keyboard on my phone, or I use the : and the ) or the ( depending on what I am saying in the text.

But from the EE community, it seems that others are maybe getting 40p charges for them as they go out as a picture.

I'm not a tight arse, but if you were to send 50 a month with a smiley to the wife and daughter (they are the usual recipients, plus a couple of work mates) then at 40p a pop that's an extra £20 on your monthly bill...

Added revenue - it's also a pic rather than what could be classed as a character. An old school smiley fits in a char space the new emojis are pics being attached.

Yeah, that's why I'm confused. I can add an emoji (android) and it takes up 92 characters of the 160 available and it sends as SMS.

Maybe android classes them as a composite of characters joined together? (If that makes sense - like a jigsaw)

    Thanks to blacksheep

were on ee and my wife has a problem being charged for mms instead of a normal sms even though there are no emojis or smileys just normal text, we found on her s4 mini if she presses the attach button, even though she has not attached anything and has cancelled the attachment it still changes the message to mms instead of sms, ee said to me there was nothing they coudl do as the phone was telling them it was a mms as it has only happened three times in a year i did bother to take it further

I use a Galaxy S5, I am on EE, I use the built in android keyboard and text app.. I frequently add symbols from the text message app and I have never been charged for MMS... 100%.. never. As a Yorkshireman I scrutinise my bill.

On an iPhone if you click and hold down you get the option to send as an sms (at least if it fails first time)
