Help Can I block landline temporarily?

A guy I know has a problem with his Chinese neighbour. His landline rings usually rings between two and three in the morning which wakes him up. It's a flat he's in so I'm guessing the walls must be pretty thin. He's tried to speak to the guy but the guy makes out he can't understand what he's saying. Someone else said there's something you can buy that clips over the landline cable outside that stops the phone ringing. I've never heard of anything like this. Does such a thing exist?

This is tried and tested solution, the louder he shouts it, the more he'll understand too.

Did you actually read the OP? I know Argyll ain't the most eloquent, he is Scotch FFS, but he is talking about silencing someone elses phone that is disturbing his mate.

He doesn't want to cut it because that's criminal damage and anyway he'd just get it repaired and he's back to square one again. I don't think he wants him suspecting some things amiss.

He can't unplug the phone at night or turn the ringer off? I think to block just the one number you'd need caller ID and a phone capable of such a function.

Get your mate to sort out what caused this neighbourly dispute in the 1st place. Sounds like the chinese guys has some sorta chip on his shoulder over something thats happened between the two of them. Failing that report it as a nuisance caller.

So even if this device existed you wouldn't be able do use it. What did you think, it would work by wifi?

So when his mate can't call him anymore and emails his to say his phone don't work, but it still works for everyone else, you think this would be much different?

plug1 wasn't very tactful nor diplomatic, but I think he's got a point.

Its really not an issue that can be helped. He is probably receiving an international call on a regular basis, is that so wrong? It's not his fault the walls are thin but he may be unaware of just how much the sound carries. Its partly bad luck, partly the downside of living in a flat.

I have had a similar issue in the past and had to repeatedly speak to the neighbour in question about it (during the phone shouting) before I got anywhere. His ethnicity is irrelevant and specifying it helps the situation not, but English wasn't his first language. He understood just fine what my issue was, he just didn't care or thought he could keep getting away with it. Persistence won in the end.

The OP seems like a bit of a moan to me rather than an actual inquiry for help. Blocking someones landline so that they can't receive potentially important calls from say a dying relative? That's immoral, ridiculous and I would be calling the popo if someone tried it on my phone.

    Thanks to Cosmicpore

It's actually posts like yours and plug's that are out of place on DF. If you don't care then move on. This forum (And most others) are built around the premiss that we share our problems and solutions. It is people like you and plug (with the attitude on display in this thread) that are out of place in a community. A bit more respect in order me thinks in the forum as a whole.......I can list quite a few forums where both of you would be on a short 1st warning ban for posting in the manner that you both have.
As for the OP sorry mate I have not heard of such a device.

    Thanks to DavidF

Does yer mate not know anyone from the same ethnic/racial backgound as the problem neighobur he could ask to communicate with him? If so get them to speak with him and tell him the problem. Get them to ask him to lower the ring tone or buy him a phone with a light that flashes when it rings. Failing that contact the local citizens advice and tell them there is a prob and you dont want it to be seen as a race issue and ask them who you should get to intervene on your behalf like landlord/ local council or whoever. Try this stuff and if all else fails cut the feckers line (joking btw.. get someone else to cut it)

To be fair the only way this will be solved is if the two neighbours can communicate.
if you go to your local Chinese I'm sure they will help you.

they have helped me many times explaining manuals etc from Chinese eBay sellers.
seriously though don't cut the phone line.

To be fair the language breakdown may not be on the Chinese mans spoken English it could easily be he does not understand the Scottish accent as is often the case with people who speak English, perhaps he could write it down for him a sort of real life subtitle like the subtitles they use on the TV for Scottish people I for one find very helpful.

Oh right, misread it. In that case ear plugs, or buy the neighbour a cheap phone with an adjustable ringer. Sounds an awful place to live if the walls aren't soundproofed enough that a phone can wake him up.
