Been a while since I had my last tat and cant remember best way of taking care of fresh tattoos. On 2nd day now so bandage came off this morning and been told to use Prep H as this is the "new" best thing.

Tried this and burned like a bastard so washed it off and applied the old E45 cream..

Anyone got good advice..

Keep it dry and apply e45 twice a day. Been the method I have used for nearly 10 years.

Everyones skin reacts differently, it might be worth having a chat with the tattooist and see what he thinks.

what i do myself and have fond for me ot heals fastest this way is to leave the bandage on for 2-3 hours then rinse the tatoo with warm soapy water do not scrub at it lol nd then dab dry then leave it until the scabs start to flake off then apply savlon twice a day until the scab has come off complelty and the skin is no longer shiny

If your using prep H make sure its the gel not the ointment 1 that you use.

According to the 1995 Drug Facts & Comparisons (Olin, et al., Facts and
Comparisons Inc.: St Louis, 1995; p 540-541) the list of ingredients
for Preparation-H are as follows:
- Live yeast cell derivative supplying 2000 units of skin respiratory
factor per ounce
- 3% shark liver oil
- 1:10000 phenyl mercuric nitrate
Facts and Comparisons goes on to say that shark liver oil (similar to
cod liver oil) is used primarily as a carrier of the active ingredients
and as a protectant, forming a physical barrier on the skin. While this
may be helpful in the healing of hemorroids, it provides no benefit and
perhaps impedes the healing of new tattoos.
Furthermore, while phenylmercuric nitrate may have antiseptic
properties (similar to mercurichrome or tincture of iodine; neither of
which should be used on fresh tattoos) it possesses very little anti-
infective properties when compared to traditional antibacterial agents
(neosporin, baccitracin, etc.). Its use in such low quantities in
Preperation-H is possibly as a preservative (Facts and Comparisons,
1995, p. 540).
The active ingredient of Preparation-H is the skin respiratory factor
and this does nothing to relieve the itching and/or swelling associated
with a new tattoo. In fact, it is best to simply keep the area moist
and clean and to avoid picking the scabs or 'onion skin peel' that
develop--and refrain from using Preparation-H. Not only will it NOT
help your tattoo, it will actually probably do more harm than good. The
product was developed for hemorrhoidal tissue only.

Okay so its 5 days on and my arm around the tat is red and sore... the scabs are soft due to the e45 (i think)..

Is this normal... Dont remember being this sore last time...

it all depends on how brutal the tattoist has been m8 some of them will hammer the ink in and it will feel like you have taken a few punches of mike tyson in ya arm whilst others have a softer approach and the redness and soreness will be gone after a day or two

Gotta admit, it hurt a lot fookin more than I remember... this was my 5th too and most painful...

when it goes red after a few days its possible a bad shave was done and a few follicles were hammered back in with the machine but keep it clean and not too moist should be ok

Thinking of having "The Eye of Ra" tattooed on my shoulder soon but aint going that tattooist again!

looks like it a combo of a bic disposable razor and the inner forearm (try to avoid bic disposable ones and take your own mach3 with you) the wrist ones of mine took a while to heal there as well (although its cos the wrists were moving and cracking the skin) and the skin on your arm there isnt like the skin on the top of your arm, if the e45 keeps it soft try savlon twice a day or even just soap and water (unperfumed soap and water is all i use and mine are healed within a fortnight and the last one took 4days)

Sorry to hijack the thread but I was given some stuff called 'tattoo goo' and was just wondering if it was any good?

Ingredients: olive oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, wheat germ oil, a source of vit e, lavender oil, sunflower oil, rosemary extract and d+c green 6.

Just wondering if it is any good or if the old fashoined savlon and e45 would be best?

Don't use Tattoo Goo. I used it once and the tattoo stayed soggy, bled and oozed green shit for 2 weeks. Had to get the whole tattoo re-worked. A very expensive, painful lesson was learnt.

Yeah casio, its my sons name... You could be right with the razors too...

alot of tattooist use bic and ive known alot of people have problems with the hair when it regrows aswell (in turned hairs mainly) as well as a rash when its fresh, its weird cos it gets me the same way and in the past ive shaved with bic and had no probelms

Ive always used prep h, especially on my all black wrist to shoulder tribal.

Worked a treat for me, yes it stung a bit but the healing process was speeded up no end.

The wife went ballistic when i had black imprints all over the bed though lol

lol when i had my leg one done it stuck to the bed sheets (my half sleeve did as well just not as much) and i got a mouth full for that as well
