Default What to do with Gooseberries ??????

Posted a while back the Mrs duped me into getting an allotment....

As things have started to sprout/bear fruit I have now identified that I have 11 gooseberry bushes ! WTF

Apart from the obvious Gooseberry Crumble any other ideas gratefully received ...

I will soon be inundated with em . That and beetroot, but that will be given away as I fucking hate the stuff!

    Thanks to macmilm

Lots of pectin in gooseberries so plain gooseberry or combo jams are easy to make.
Rhubarb n gooseberry is a good combo if you've got some rhubarb on the grow too.

I have 3 Gooseberry bushes and get a massive crop every year. I like to eat them raw off the bush but a crumble or pie goes down well too. When making a pie I make a sweet shortcrust pastry with sugar eggs and real butter. Much nicer than plain shortcrust pastry. Has to be prepared in the following order or it will be impossible to roll without breaking up. When prepared this way the pastry is easy to roll and does not easily break up even when rolled quite thin. (">

    The ingredients
    140g unsalted butter, slightly softened,
    90g caster sugar,
    1 large egg
    270g plain flour.

    Need to know
This recipe uses what’s known as the creaming method because it makes the pastry dough pliable and so easier to work with.

Step 1 - Put the butter in a bowl with the sugar and cream together using a wooden spoon or hand-held electric mixer. You don’t want the mixture to be too fluffy; just bring it together.

Step 2 - Add the egg to the butter mixture and beat until smooth and completely incorporated.
Step 3 - Mix the flour with a pinch of salt and fold into the butter mixture gradually, in batches, until absorbed. Be sure to incorporate all the butter sticking to the sides of the bowl. Don’t worry if the pastry is quite crumbly at this stage.
Step 4 - Turn the pastry onto a lightly floured surface and knead it quickly until it all comes together. You need a light and gentle touch here – if you work it too much, the pastry will be tough
Step 5 - Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes. This resting stage is essential, because not only will the pastry be easier to roll into shape, it won't shrink while it’s cooking.
Step 6 - Remove the pastry from the fridge. Place on a lightly floured surface and, with a floured rolling pin, roll to the thickness required. Turn regularly to achieve an even shape before using to line your tart tin.

    Thanks to BigBird

    Gooseberry wine ;-)

Also sort that beetroot out too as very good for you, a lot of top athletes drink neat beetroot extract before events as meant to improve concentration, energy and stamina. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-st...s-2306407.html

Easy then, get a mandolin and deep fry them.
Sprinkle some seasoning on them - Paprika, Chilli, Salt, Pepper etc and experiment.

Then bag them up and sell them. Give some away for free in the BST section so we can judge. This is how great businesses start... Next you could get onto the local pubs and ask them to stock them knocking them out at £1/£1.50 a bag.
