I'd use CCleaner for things like this. It deletes using overwrites (called Drive Wiper), which makes it harder to recover information.

Use CCleaner its free and easy to use. Do a 3 pass erase or more. This will be ok and no one can possibly see your files

If doing the whole drive use DBAN (Dariks boot and nuke). If you are disposing of the drive you can smash the shit out of it and make sure the platters are well and truly fucked, one data recovery firm managed to get data off of a severely burnt drive.

if its a sata drive take a look at the secure erase command built into every sata hdd, only way ive done it is from Linux on a bootable usb pen, its not a 1 click prossess but is faster than overwrites and guarentees the data is 99.9999999% non recoverable

I think there are some windows programs that will run the command but you have to pay for them, haven't found a free windows solution yet

    heres the instructions http://mackonsti.wordpress.com/2011/...e-ata-command/

hi not sure if you sorted this but this is a powerfull little shredder and simple

    SHREDDING FILES

Shredder allows you to erase files in such a way that it is impossible to recover them by software or hardware means. When you delete a file using standard tools, only a reference to its data is removed from system allocation tables and the file's clusters are marked as unused, but no actual erasing is performed until another file overwrites the area on the disk where the original file resided. There are utilities capable of tracing and restoring deleted files, therefore you should never delete files containing sensitive information in a regular way.

The proper solution is to overwrite the file with meaningless data before deleting it, which is exactly what Shredder does. There are several methods available, varying in speed and reliability

    rar
    Code:
    http://speedy.sh/BqDhx/Shredder.rar
ps: there is no copyright its riped form bart live cd

I was looking into this the other day and apparently more than one pass isn't supposed to be any more secure unless you have the government trying to recover files. If that is the case then a single random pass using active@ kill disk should suffice.

The best one is called "Eraser". Recommended by the best authority on freeware on the internet, Gixmo (techsupportalert.com) (no association with them, just a fan).

    Hey Bill
I see from both your posts you are using your knowledge and experience to help other forum users, which is definitly the way to go (as per your joiners private message), but a little headsup m8, you haven't done an intro in the intro section.
