Default How long does it take for Max Adsl to stabilise?

    Hi All

I Migrated over from pipex on the 20th of June 2006 over to Ace Internet, i opted for the 2mb service etc etc

However since then I've been getting constant disconnections with the line (mainly every couple of minutes or so), it says that the it takes around 5 working days for line speeds to become stable, however it has well exceeded this period.

How long should it take? I've emailed Ace the other day but no reply yet.

Marcode, are you having this problem?

10 days minimum before your isp will even look at it, it takes that long because the exchange cards auto calibrate themselves until they find a "happy medium". The only time that BT will even take a call from your isp for a line test is if you have no connection or below 64kbs

adsl max is a load of shite imho, it is the maximum speed that can be fired down your cable, but hardly anyone actually gets the maximum speed offered by the isp, there is an awful lot that will slow it down, the actual cable in the roads being the main factor.
I was on a dsl seminar recently, and apparently BT are going to start slowly replacing the cables going from the exchanges to the roadside boxes with fiber, like the cable companies have always done, to maintain speeds and reliability.
Most of the cable in the roads has been there long before the internet was even thought possible, some 50 years, and a lot of it is just not up to carrying the frequency that dsl operates at....

If your MAXdsl line is unstable you can try power cycling your modem/router 2/3 times a day, it can cause the bRAS to reset your line profile, and stabilise the line.

I signed up for 8mb and went live yesterday, my initial line test said I could get 5mg. Ran a line test today due to slow download speeds and I am on 1mg. Will wait patiently for this to increase, but will also call their tech support guys to check everything was provisioned correctly.

As far as I'm aware the only BT product you can be provsioned on for upto 8mbit speeds is MAXdsl. The speed can be throttled, either by the bRAS or your ISP, but it is unlikely they got the provision wrong.

5mg download speeds due to the distance I am from the exchange pal. Hmm, well I tried powercycling my router 5 times on Saturday and 3 times yesterday... made no difference. I have been trying to get through to tech support since 9am this morning!! I have been disconnected twice and the looped hold music sounds very similar to F2S. I am not impressed, this is worse than F2S!!!

    edit:

I know this isn't concrete, but losing 5mg when I am 1000 yards from the exchange??

For Telephone Number *********** on Exchange BARNET

Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 6Mb (Megabits per second).

Please note that this speed is only an estimate based on information available to us about the length of your phone line. Your actual speed will additionally depend on factors within your home, principally the length and quality of any internal phone wiring, and the speed of your computer and modem or router.

It's your hardware connecting at 1mbit, or is it just downloads which come down at 1mbit?

If you are connecting below your fault threshold rate (which is 70% of your maximum stable rate, and is set during the trainning period), then your ISP can raise a fault.

If your through put is low, the best thing you can do is run speedtests at http://speedtester.bt.com, at let your ISP know. They can then pull the results of the speed tests from BTs records, and investigate further.

If you're talking about the speeds settling down, then it should be within that ten day period specified by BT. Though to be on the safe side I'd give it fifteen days. During this your ISP won't be able to raise a speed fault to BT, but should still be able to raise a fault if you're loosing sync with the exchange all the time. I know we certainly do this at work, or we did before we put a hold on upgrades to Max.

For a rough idea on what percentage of people on Max have problems, check out the news item on http://adslguide.org

With regards to the BT speedtest, make sure you read the instructions and login with the specified username. Otherwise, its unlikely your fault will even be seen by a BT Wholesale engineer.

Thanks for the speed test info, I will check it out when I get home tonight.

I would love to speak with someone at Ace (my ISP), unfortunately they never answer the telephone or respond to email's. After the announcement yesterday about monthly download limits I am already consideringmigrating elsewhere. The service I have received as a new customer is appalling.

Can't really comment on the customer service levels, though part of it could be down to upgrading a large number of people to Max and then dealing with the fallout from that.

The monthly download limits are something that we're going to have to get used to though. Certainly from ISPs that have to use BT Wholesale to provide the connections anyway, simply due to the sheer cost of infrastructure.

I finally received a response from tech support and I quote "what is your home telephone number". Even though I have included this several times in email's to them. I have stopped the direct debit coming out of my account, maybe they will pay attention and respond to me when the money stops.

Heloo all max dsl should take 14 days to settle bt will not look in to any fault untill after that time. It may be worth you requesting your isp to disable interleaving to see that helps.
